Just got a mail from China thro ProZ which ticks some of these boxes:

- they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.

- they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
- they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
- they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
- it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

This sounds like the "Pyramid" or "Snowball" systems. Only the (criminal) people at the top get rich, and you (the foot soldiers), should anybody fall for it, might end up in prison.

Apparently ProZ is being abused by these scammers. But to my knowledge there's no way to keep the frausters away and from molesting translators.

You didn't mention whether that "company" had a profile page here or had just searched the directory.

Btw. asking translators to collect money isn't a job... unless the scammer pays them for translation or interpretation services.

And perhaps I'm being unfair to China. Nigerian scammers tend to misuse other countries nowadays.

Glad to find a post in here already - got the same email today through ProZ.com » Connect Platform » Message Center about processing payments on a part-time basis... hahaha! Trying hard to make it sound like a job description... It's from a very newly created profile: http://www.proz.com/profile/1930561

Meanwhile, ProZ Admin has removed the scammer's profile. Good and fast reaction!
