The most important word here is in fact "diabetic", because that word in itself involves the notion separate (for a chef) immediately. The word separate does not mean anything as it does not provide information about what kind of separate (it may be any kind of special diet).

Their choice Dec 14, 2022

Philip Lees wrote:

Of course not. The term "artificial intelligence" is a bad choice - at least as far as the current status is concerned.

Well, the term was their choice. Reading the current definition of AI at Wikipedia, I can't find anything that says that AI includes tasks that require actual intelligence, such as finding the contradiction in the TV streaming sentences, something a human of normal intelligence can quite easily do in a second.

Not much actual intelligence seems to be involved in AI. Computers can learn some routines, but they can't think or simulate thinking. Let's just remember that before we all panic and think we have to accept ludicrous payment because we think computers will take our professions.

It was stolen from the industrial world Dec 14, 2022

They just copied principles from manufacturing and industry. But these things just require motoric sequences (eg. assembly line workers) with minimal cognitive involvement. And they wanted to apply this to cognitive processes without ever consulting any cognitive science experts seemingly.

Another example of the absence of intelligence Dec 14, 2022

AI: "There is nothing unclear in the sentence. It states that 2022 has been a good year for the speaker's activities, and as part of their efforts to support the climate and environment, they donated 7% of their revenue to an organization called HelpThePlanet on Giving Tuesday."

The unclear part is that it is not specified for which period the 7% is calculated. In this context, it could sound as if it were 7% of the annual revenue, but in fact it was 7% of Giving Tuesday's revenue. This is a real example from a client's source text (reworded for confidentiality), just like the TV streaming example. I did not make up these examples. In both cases, the client's text was misleading or unclear, and I pointed it out and got it fixed. With AI and MT only, clients can forget about that sort of 'thinking' extras.

The examples provided by Thomas illustrate, among other issues, one serious problem of most AI systems: they never say "Sorry, I don't know" or "Not enough information to answer, please provide more".

The correct Danish word is 'teleslynge'. DeepL doesn't get it right either. They both just translate it word for word. Yet, one can look it up in IATE. I can just imagine the disaster if this technology were to be allowed to translate a catalogue of specialised hearing devices. And agencies expect us to give general discounts for such rubbish.

Let us keep all these flaws in mind the next time someone claims technology will soon be able to do our work.

Create an original poem with words duck, house, jump and weld. It needs to rhyme and make sense.

The duck, the house, and the man at the forge, oh!

It's technically correct, but assembly line work without any deeper meaning. This is no replacement for real poetry, so what's the use?

Actually poetic images Dec 14, 2022

It did draw some images. It could work as a child poem. TBH, I was surprised as it makes sense. This is probably neural networks, as there is a progression of events in the poem.

Actually I checked it twice, and some things don’t make sense:

House made of hay - the house stands strong and true (the hay is strong?). True house, what does that mean?
Sparks fly away - won’t they burn down the house of hay?

Yes, semantic progression is definitely not

The abilities of this machine are far beyond what we have seen so far. Yes, it's not true intelligence, it's just a simulation of intelligence, but it's also just a trial run and will get better exponentially. At some point, simulated intelligence will be sufficient for the majority of today's white collar jobs. We can see that clearly now.

Juxtaposed with ELIZA software written almost 60 years ago, ChatGPT doesn't seem to be so far beyond - except, of course, a much bigger volume of data that went into it. And I see no reason why its further growth is to be exponential. My gut feeling is just the opposite, that it will slow down with time.b

It's smarter than many native British journalists, then.

No wonder Airbus stopped producing them, when airlines don't even know where to keep their aircraft.

The use of ChatGPT should be restricted? Dec 16, 2022

Dutch newspaper nrc published an op-ed today, warning for the possible dangerous effects of AI like ChatGPT:

In every situation, it turns out that ChatGPT is not a neutral and innocent tool. Even in the most positive cases, it will forever change our relationship with what we consider real or fake. Fake news, filter bubbles, conspiracy theories and deepfakes are child's play compared to what ChatGPT is capable of. A machine capable of spreading misinformation better than humans should not be admired, but abhorred. As a society, we are totally unprepared for the truth subverting effects of this malicious automated virus. The use of ChatGPT should be restricted and even punishable in case of abuse.

Here is an excellent explanation from stackoverflow.com:

Use of ChatGPT generated text for content on Stack Overflow is temporarily banned.
Please see the Help Center article: Why posting GPT and ChatGPT generated answers is not currently acceptable

This is a temporary policy intended to slow down the influx of answers and other content created with ChatGPT. What the final policy will be regarding the use of this and other similar tools is something that will need to be discussed with Stack Overflow staff and, quite likely, here on Meta Stack Overflow.

Overall, because the average rate of getting correct answers from ChatGPT is too low, the posting of answers created by ChatGPT is substantially harmful to the site and to users who are asking and looking for correct answers.

The primary problem is that while the answers which ChatGPT produces have a high rate of being incorrect, they typically look like they might be good and the answers are very easy to produce. There are also many people trying out ChatGPT to create answers, without the expertise or willingness to verify that the answer is correct prior to posting. Because such answers are so easy to produce, a large number of people are posting a lot of answers. The volume of these answers (thousands) and the fact that the answers often require a detailed read by someone with at least some subject matter expertise in order to determine that the answer is actually bad has effectively swamped our volunteer-based quality curation infrastructure.

As such, we need to reduce the volume of these posts and we need to be able to deal with the ones which are posted quickly, which means dealing with users, rather than individual posts.

So, for now, the use of ChatGPT to create posts here on Stack Overflow is not permitted. If a user is believed to have used ChatGPT after the posting of this temporary policy, sanctions will be imposed to prevent them from continuing to post such content, even if the posts would otherwise be acceptable.
