Polyglot botanical dictionary first published in 1980 (the introduction is hence quite outdated, but this does not apply to the actual entries of the dictionary).

The multilingual dictionary contains more than 12,000 Latin technical terms, including graphic variants as well as terms made up of two words. Corresponding technical terms are given in Romanian, English, German, French, Hungarian and Russian.

That's very interesting. I never had to refer to a botanical dictionary, but I've been collecting various dictionaries and the last one I bought is a re-print of one that was first published in 1936 in Cairo by Armenag K. Bedevian. Its English title is "Illustrated Polyglottic Dictionary of Plant Names". It covers 3657 plants with 1711 images and definitions in Latin, English, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Armenian and Arabic.

I just found a PDF file containing the said work: http://www.islamicmanuscripts.info/reference/books/Bedevian-1984-Polyglottic%20Dictionary%20of%20Plant%20Names.pdf

Hope it helps.

Thank you, Nov 13, 2022

I seem to have posted this into the forum erroneously while entering it into the glossary database (here's to havong too many tabs open), but your entry is super interestiing to me as well (especially as for Italian and Turkish)! I have used such dictionares mainly when translating/transcreating linguistic papers, so I'm not a biology expert either, but had to look up plant names every once in a while.

Réka and Metin,

Thank you very much for sharing information.
I am not an expert in botany but these materials are precious as
I am a polyglot translator and also learn Latin.

When Japanese doctors prescribe medications, traditional Chinese herbal medicines ("lingzhi"; Kanpouyaku) oftentimes figure beside Western ones. Along the way I have had to acquire suitable dictionaries. Failing these, the library of the Harvard Yenching Institute provides many options.

The foreword in Russian is a fun read Nov 14, 2022

I have some books that were translated way before the internets, and the translations there are so clumsy and just different. And they were probably done by native Russian speakers, but in this case, my guess is that whoever wrote the foreword didn't speak Russian. I love how sometimes life throws at you a sudden glimpse into how people did things back in history. Thanks for sharing
