I've been asked to remove the entry. They said I will be paid, but have to wait untill their customer approved/paid. Did not accept that!

How unprofessional and rude! (of them).

I wouldn't remove the entry. At most I'd offer to edit it after payment in full. If they're not happy with that then they better be happy with the stain on their BB record.

I would have thought this type of thing was reportable to ProZ (although what they can then do about it I'm not sure - at the very least they can issue a few "threats" of their own - surely agencies who act like this don't belong on this site/should be banned).

Angelique - note that your BB entry has got them very concerned. This may explain their reaction. So it's very important that you do NOT remove it. It's evident that agencies take the Blue Board extremely seriously.

Your next step should be to report this agency, and its attitude, to Proz. There is a facility on the Blue Board that lets you do this. Do NOT change your BB entry in any way.

Proz can (if they wish) ban them from the site. This terrifies the bad agencies.

And don't EVER agree to change/remove it when they pay you (because the whole point of the Blue Board is to warn other future translators about the bad behaviour of agencies.)

I would never remove an entry in this situation, but it's not unreasonable to change a 1 to a 2 for example, merely to reflect the fact you eventually got paid (with an appropriate comment reflecting this). Or if you feel your experience was that bad leaving the number alone and just editing the comment. This still serves as a warning to other translators that either this agency is unlikely to pay or that you'll have a fight on your hands trying to get them to pay.

Of course I wouldn't advocate changing a bad entry to a glowing one in order to get paid.

I do not change my negative ratings even if I was paid in the end by the help of my lawyer.

The BlueBoard works, because quite a few people address me regarding a negative entry. That's the idea: warning others.

If that agency has no money of its own, it deserves no place in the market. You have done you job and you should be paid under the terms and conditions you have agreed with this agency for this particular job. Now, it's this agency's job to get the money from the client, otherwise, what for it takes its share of the pie? Besides, you have no say in their financial relations, this agency may decide to give a deferral of payment for any time, provide discounts, etc., but it's this agency's decision which has effect only to this agency, not you.
- state in your reply that you have reported this threat to proz.com staff;
- state in your reply that unless they make payment within the term set by you, you will add to your BB comment a copy of their e-mail with this threat so that other translators see it in future and make their decisions about working with this agency bearing in mind the fact they may face such problems.

The agency's risk is greater than yours. It stands to lose many more translators from this site who potentially may work for it, thus, potentially, losing more money.

If this agency does not pay, you will be rewarded anyway for many translators will thank you. And this is quite a good reward. Doing kind things to people and punishing evildoers will always be rewarded.

Yuri's first recommendation is really important. Otherwise, how many times will the same agency threaten translators? And how many of those translators will be (a) young and/or naïve, (b) desperate for some money, (c) lacking self-confidence? What are the odds that they will do exactly as they are told? Please do us all a favour by reporting this behaviour. Both of you, and anyone else who is suffering at the hands of this unscrupulous agency!

I'm with Ty that the BB entry should show the most current situation. If they've delayed payment for long enough to warrant a 1, that can never be changed to a 3+, IMHO. But it could be valid to change it to a 2 if they convince you that it was a one-off problem (individual PMs have been known to be the cause of problems), and an update to the comment is actually very useful in all cases.

Note to staff: Could the FAQ include a clearer message about threats, please? It seems to be an increasingly common occurrence and is an extremely worrying development. There are very many translators here who need help to defend their rights.

I'd also suggest making friends with a lawyer authorised to practice in your jurisidiction or in whatever jurisdiction you have a good number of clients, so that the lawyer can print such final demands for you on his firm stationery and affix his scary signature, perhaps inviting a colleague or two to co-sign if your non-payer is a particularly robust entity. It costs nothing but it shows you mean business.

If you do talk to the lawyer, remember to ask him about copyrights. Reviewers can have copyrights too, at least if they edited the text in more ways than simply fixing spelling errors. But I wouldn't touch copyrights without a lawyer.
