Hello all,

I am doing a certified translation of a family register (戸籍). (I have a NAATI number and am not doing this through an agency.)

For addresses usually I use the post office website to confirm readings and the use Hepburn system to transliterate, as suggested in the AUSIT handbook.

HOWEVER

There is an address on this one for a location that is now part of a new administrative division (it was 合併'ed). It was quite long and complicated.
I have checked with the client but they don't have any old paperwork with the reading available.
I have found disparate references in Wikipedia to different parts of the old administrative division with the reading which I think is correct but nothing more "official" than that. Have checked on the town website which has a list of the old administrative divisions and their new names, but only has the readings for the new names. However, I can hash together what it probably would have been because the surrounding areas have similar names.

Is it OK to just go ahead and base my translations on the information I can scrounge up on the internet? Or does this warrant a phone call to the city office for confirmation?

I'm 99% sure that the bits and pieces I have researched mean I have the correct reading for the name, but just wondering how/whether I need to make this more watertight.

I don’t translate from Japanese but I was a certified translator (EN/FR/ES/IT->PT) for over 20 years and in similar cases, when in doubt, I used to put “unknown”, “illegible” or “unreadable”. Hope it helps, but if you are 99% sure...
