Hi all, Could someone suggest a professional indexing software. Unfortunatelly, Windows 7 Indexing tool on my desktop fails to index all my working files, stored on my business server (SBS 2008). As a result, it costs me too much time to find a file by searching for a word or expression. KR Sherefedin | | | Natalie Polska Local time: 22:09 Członek ProZ.com od 2002 angielski > rosyjski + ... Hi Sherefedin, I use Archivarius 3000 and am quite happy with it. Depending on the number of documents the indexes may be quite large (one of mine has about 4GB), but the program is very handy and quite simple in use. Natalia
Hi Natalia, Thank you very much for your suggestion. It seems to be exactly what I need! KR Sherefedin | | | Copernic desktop search | Feb 10, 2011 |
I have used it for several years now and am quite happy with its performance.it is much better than Windows indexing. First of all it categorises your search results in documents, e-mails, contacts, history etc. Additionally after getting results you can apply filters according to the document type, date.

Natalia Hello Natalia, That sounds very interesting: is Archivarius able to index TMs in the TMX and SDLTM (Trados Studio) formats - or only those under the txt format? Hi Aude, Unfortunately, Archivarius does not index SLDTM - most probably because this format is rather new. However, it does index TMX and MDB. PDFs and ITD files are also indexed as well. Natalia | | | Aude Sylvain Francja Local time: 22:09 angielski > francuski + ...

Anyway if it can index TMXs that's already quite nice! As far as I know (and see), Win 7's search tool cannot. The ability to index PDFs is interesting too. Thanks for the tip! Aude Edited for typo

Be careful: even though a program can index TMX files, that doesn't mean it can actually display them without causing your PC to grind to a halt every time you click on a TMX in the results display. Copernic is probably the best all round desktop search client, but most PCs aren't stong enough to display the preview of a TMX. However, Copernic is great at previewing Word documents, and PDF's, which is why it is so useful. Michael

[Edited at 2011-02-12 23:51 GMT] If you are looking for terms in (large) TMXs, it's best to use Copernic to locate an instance of your search term, and then check the size of the file in question before clicking on it to preview it. If it is very large, simply navigate to the file in question and open it in a text editor, preferably one that specialises in LARGE files, such as UltraEdit. Even on my Win7 - 64 bit - i7 quad core - 12 GB RAM - SSD hard drive, etc PC, every desktop search client I have tried (X1, dtSearch, Copernic, Windows search on XP/Vista/7, Archivarius, etc) stalls on files much larger than 20-30 MB.

In Wilbur (an ancient indexer that chokes on 1+GB files) you can set the maximum content buffer. In other words, if a file is above this threshold, it won't attempt to display it in the preview pane. Don't modern indexers have such a setting?

Copernic can do this too, but if I do this, I won't know if the term I am looking for is there or not. I find it better to allow Copernic to index the file anyway, and then just open it in UltraEdit. Copernic is very uncomfortable in use. I uninstalled it after a few days. Natalia | | | Michael Beijer Wielka Brytania Local time: 21:09 Członek ProZ.com od 2009 niderlandzki > angielski + ...
