The morning I heard the news
When I woke up on the morning of October 14, 1988, I caught a quick radio report that a few grey whales had been spotted in some rapidly closing holes in the sea ice off of Barrow, Alaska.
I was sorry to hear the news since I cared a great deal about whales, but this was a natural event that at that moment I didn’t consider we could or should try to do anything about. I had my hands full as the Whale Campaign Coordinator for Greenpeace USA. We were waging an all-out battle to stop the whaling industry in three countries, with our attention focused on Iceland which was killing endangered fin whales as part of its so-called “research” whaling program.

Histórico
A maioria de nós já viu as imagens do incidente de Auckland em 1995 quando um acoplamento do hidrante falhou o que resultou em uma liberação de combustível sob pressão total do hidrante. Se este jato de combustível tivesse entrado em contato com uma fonte de ignição, como um motor de aeronave quente ou o sistema de escape de um veículo nas proximidades, o resultado poderia ter sido uma ignição de força explosiva e possivelmente diversas mortes, já que o jato de combustível atingiu várias aeronaves vizinhas, conforme podemos ver na imagem da câmera de segurança.

This Bulletin reiterates the requirements for compliance with EI 1584 Third Edition for hydrant pit valves and couplers, which help AIR COMPANY X mitigate one of our major accident risks.
Background
Most of us have seen the graphic images of the Auckland Incident in 1995 when a pit coupler failed, resulting in a release of fuel under full hydrant pressures. Had this spray come into contact with a source of ignition such as a hot aircraft engine or the exhaust system of a nearby vehicle, the outcome could have been an ignition of explosive force and possibly multiple fatalities, as the spray engulfed several neighboring aircraft, as shown in the CCTV image below.

Change detection applications through use of sequential satellite images;
Multi-layer restriction mapping in support of alternative alignment studies for linear infrastructure projects;
Spatial representation of demographic and other socio-economic variables;
Volumetric estimates with use of three-dimensional imaging (borrow sites, tailings dams, sanitary landfills, etc.);
Site investigation support;
Soil run-off models in support of watershed management programs;
Land-use mapping and density modeling;
Geographic database support for urban growth and/or induced developed modeling;
Geographic database support for traffic allocation models.

In Brazil, an Environmental Impact Assessment for a 250,000 barrel per day refinery in the northeastern coast was developed. Support to Lenders on the Environmental and Social Due Diligence of oil exploration activities in 21 blocks in the Amazon region was also provided. This included development of key Environmental and Social Management Plans for the exploration phase.
