I know she has her critics. Brodsky's problem seems to have been that he didn't think a woman could translate prose written by a man. It doesn't bother me, but it brings us back rather neatly to the "feminist translation" topic. Any translator will inevitably introduce their own "voice" into their translations; this applies to all languages. I like Garnett's "voice" and, as I say, it was recommended by a (very distinguished) writer of short stories.

The real problem with the sample translation is that it appears to have been done by a non-native or person whose competence is in the opposite direction in these language pairs. It reads awkward throughout, with literal translation, and copycat syntax.

I think our choices go in the area of "he or she" instead of "he", using "Ms." instead of "Miss" and "Mrs.", "fire fighter" instead of "fireman", "chairperson" instead of "chairman". None of these things compromise the transfer of meaning, and in fact they are probably more accurate.
