Hello all,
I recently relocated to Canberra from the UK and am in the process of finding the right broadband connection-provider for my needs. I recently relocated to Canberra from the UK and am in the process of finding the right broadband connection-provider for my needs. Coming from the European market I am a bit overwhelmed with the way the systems works here, and since the prices are a lot higher than what I am used to, I find it difficult to judge what is a good offer or not.
So even after extensive online research I am not clear about what might be the best solution. Therefore I thought I'd ask fellow translators what/who they use and how are they finding the service in terms of reliability.
I obviously use the internet for my work and I can see customers in Europe moving towards online TM, where you have to work while being online, so I would think a reliable service is really important.
I am currently looking at packages with iinet and internode which are around the $80 mark for 100 GB. However there are a lot of other installation and modem costs and they tend to tie you into a 2 year contract.
On the other hand I have found Eftel that does offer the same price with unlimited GB and on a monthly contract in our area. But of course that means that they could raise prices at any point.
If you have any suggestions or just can share what your package looks like, I would appreciate it.

Hi Kristina,
welcome, and I hope you won't find the Canberra winters too cold after the UK! Our internet is expensive, it's just how it is. Australia is an island and the nearest neighbours are far away.

Your best friend for broadband selection is Whirlpool - http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ . It's the best broadband comparison website in Australia, and the forums are also excellent (covering everything from technology to home renovations to pet ownership... anything your heart desires). You may find that you can't actually use some of the ISP providers, as they don't supply your area, so make use of their phone number search function. Though you should be ok in Canberra.
You also may not be able to get "Naked" ADSL in a lot of areas, that depends on supplier - that means that you'll have to pay Telstra about $32 per month for phone line rental plus ADSL costs.
However, a reasonable amount to pay is about $60 for ADSL 2+, which should give you 100 GB download limit. I get that with TPG (plus I have to pay Telstra for a phone line).
A 6 month contract is normal, (or a 2 year one for better deals), but you don't have to buy hardware from the supplier company - check out online shops like Officeworks, Umart, Megabuy or eBay.
Otherwise, you can go mobile, but expect to pay more and you'll still have to buy a modem.
P.S. If you spend a lot of time in regional areas, just get Telstra. Trust me on that, nobody else has coverage as good as they do! By "regional", I mean 1-2 hours drive out of any decent sized city, or any significantly sized countryside ▲ Collapse | | | Vanda Nissen Австралия Local time: 18:28 English to Russian + ...
Hi Kristina,
First of all, please forget about Europe and European Internet, you are not going to get anything similiar in terms of the reliability, unlimited GB etc. Just to give you a better idea of what is going on with Internet down under - some of the areas (and I am not talking about the remote ones) still do not have Internet coverage like many suburbs here, in Adelaide. The only option people have is using mobile Internet.

Anyway, we are with Telstra, although it is the most expensive provider, it is also the most reliable one in Australia. Our package includes Internet, a landline number and a mobile number, our bills are around 200- 210 AUD per month. And yes, I think, all the companies will tie you into a 24-months contract.
There are two major companies, Telstra and Optus in Australia, the rest of the companies are just subcontractors, and it is not really reliable. Internode, at least here, in Adelaide, gets a lot of complaints, I do not know maybe the situation is better in Canberra (because it is a capital, after all).
I hope, it helps a bit:).

Hi Kristina, I have a good deal with tpg but I did find that the cost of phone calls from the landline was very expensive, so we now use my mobile for most calls as I have a good mobile deal from liveconnected. So if you went with tpg I would try and get the package without landline if possible.
Hope this helps.
