As far as I know, only hungarian language has á and é sounds, so it is usually a bit difficult for foreigners to pronounce them. Just let your children learn hungarian, it is an another language knowledge for them, and it can be very useful for them in the future, because very few people speaks it in other countries. I would be delighted if my children learned Hungarian. They'll have to find a teacher, though! They are third-generation Canadian, so the great-grandfather who came from Budapest is gone, and in the tradition of New Canadians, the grandfather doesn't know the language. It's a shame, I know. All I can do is teach them French! Have a great day, Nancy | | | Pronunciation of the Surname Dancs | Oct 6, 2010 |
Hello, Would this Hungarian surname be pronounced 'Dunch'? There may be an accent mark above the 'a' in Dancs. Regards, Bob | | | Csaba Ban Hungary Local time: 10:34 Member (2002) English to Hungarian + ...
Yes, "cs" in Hungarian is pronounced as "ch" in English. "dunch" is pretty close to the correct pronunciation of the Dancs surname, but you have to know that "u" here is more closed than "a" in Dancs. Perhaps a better approximation would be "donch". There's no accent on this name - I used to have an immediate neighbour with this name, that's how I know.

The á in Hungarian represents the /a:/ phoneme. The same phoneme is used in RP English, for example in the fa and la in do-re-mi-fa-sol-la. The é in Hungarian represents the /e:/ phoneme ie a lengthened /e/. The short /e/ is found in RP English bed, red, said. The long /e:/ is found in some North American English dialects, for example in play. It is also found in German, Norwegian and Swedish. | | | ScottHMoore United Kingdom Local time: 09:34 Member (2015) Hungarian to English + ... Pronunciation of Hungarian 'a' | Oct 7, 2010 |
Robt wrote: Hello, Would this Hungarian surname be pronounced 'Dunch'? There may be an accent mark above the 'a' in Dancs. Regards, Bob I don't know how you pronounce 'Dunch' - the way I would pronounce the 'u' has no equivalent in Hungarian and, indeed, is a very difficult vowel sound for Hungarians to say. The 'a' in Hungarian is very close to the 'o' in hot when pronounced in RP English (imagine how a BBC newsreader would say it). | | | hungarian and the german language | Jul 2, 2011 |
Hi, I am new to this site and live in the U.S. but was born and raised in Germany. I am fluent in both. My fiancee has ancestors from Hungary so we were doing research on the language. I need to know if I am understanding this right... that the hungarian pronunciation is alot like speaking german. I want to learn. So if it is like german it shouldnt be that hard for me.... thanks... sammi
