Alternative CAT tools that work directly with Office files Thread poster: AaronArthur

Hello all! This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I'm looking for something similar to Felix as an alternative CAT tool. I use Trados, but have really enjoyed using Ryan Ginstrom's Felix for the past 10 years. I liked that I didn't have to convert Word/Excel/Powerpoint files into a proprietary format and back again after translating. Hi, looking at the felix website (blog) it seems development has been stopped and all the code was sent to MIT licenses. However, none of the download links are working. Felix is new to me, it seems some SQL is used. Do you have non-sensitive actual examples we can look at to see how to convert them? As an alternative, I'd recommend Wordfast Classic (MS Word only). Otherwise, Wordfast Anywhere allows you to switch to a Classic-like view. | | | Wordfast, Anaphraseus, MetaTexis, ... | Jun 16, 2022 |

Unfortunately I don't have any non-sensitive examples, but after some experimenting I found out that Excel can open the FTMs and create an XML file automatically, so I was able to extract the text. I now just have to figure out how to automate stripping the formatting tags and I can then create SDLTMs for Trados. So all is not lost! | |

Booted Windows and had a look at the Windows version of CafeTran Espresso: Ms Word isn't offered as an editor (I've contacted the developer about this). Perhaps this is because I'm using the 365 edition of the Ms Office suite? WordPad for Windows is supported though. Hi Aaron, If you can open with Excel, you'll be able to solve this quite easily. Just make sure you end up with a two-columns file with source and target language code on top of columns. Then you can use that file for conversion in Heartsome TMX editor and strip tags. | | | Or your own company's product | Jun 17, 2022 |

Thank you Samuel for the download links! Some time ago I was curious about trying out Felix but could not download it. | | | Yes but doesn't clean tags | Jun 17, 2022 |

At the moment WfConverter does not have the option to remove tags, hence my suggestion. BTW WfConverter can now convert a TMX to txlf, this is handy for those wanting to have more options to edit and filter a TM in Wordfast Pro.
