Dear all,
I am asked to conduct a naming consultation which includes Egypt and Morocco - can you tell me which languages, besides Arabic (and French in Morocco) are spoken there?
Many thanks for your quick reply! | | | craigs Local time: 07:24 English to Portuguese + ... http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/mo.html | Jul 28, 2005 |
If CIA has any stigma to anyone here, please set it aside for informational purposes. Their website compiles pretty concise and accurate info on pretty much any country. It's a handy reference and decent starting point. | | | umsarah Local time: 14:24 English to Arabic + ... In Egypt, it's only Arabic | Jul 28, 2005 |
Arabic is the only formal language in Egypt. There are, however, two varieties of Arabic; a high variety (formal or tranditional Arabic), that is used in official documents, political speeches, newspapers and news programs allover the Arab world, and a low variety (colloquial Arabic), that is the everyday language that people normally use.The high variety of Arabic (or traditional Arabic) is the same in all Arab countries, and is understood anywhere in the Arab world. There are more than one dialect, though, as far as the colloquial language is concerened. In Egypt, the official language is Arabic, and the most common foreign languages that people use are English, in the first place, and French. ▲ Collapse | | | tarjama Швейцария Local time: 13:24 English to Arabic + ... The Nubians south of Kumm Umbo speak their own, ancient language, which is not one of the Semitic languages. Nubian itself is made up of a number of different branches - Makas, Kunuz and Dongolawi (I am open to correction by other Nubians, if I am mistaken). For the majority of Nubians, Arabic is a second language with unpronouncable letters and too much gender suffixes
Among the Christian population, Coptic is making a slow, but persistent come-back.
As for the Arabic dialects there are quite a few - Sinai Arabs have one, Siwah speaks a different one. Bahri (Medditerraean) is known to use plural for first singular person. Qibli uses a much heavier, but delightful, Saidi dialect.
There is much more richness to Egypt than many are willing to admit. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » What languages, besides Arabic, are spoken in Egypt in Morocoo?
