I am confused as to whether the phrasal noun "سوء المعاملة" is feminine or masculine. My instinct says it is feminine, but I have found many instances where it is treated as being masculine.

Example:
سوء المعاملة الذي أدى به إلى...

I would appreciate it if the linguists among us could shed some light on this issue.

بيت السيدة الجميل الذي... = the lady's beautiful house which...
بيت السيدة الجميلة التي... = the house of the beautiful lady who...

In your example, the relative clause refers to the mudhaaf (سوء) not the mudhaaf ilayh, so that's what determines the gender.
