I can't remember how I fixed it. But the file in question started with a character that is disallowed in Windows as a file name's starting character (possibly the character was allowed in other operating systems). I think what I did was to rename the original file, before sending it to Trados. But I remember I had to employ some googling to figure out how to rename the file.

When I try to export a translated file, Trados sends me following message:

The target text could not be saved: A name must not begin with the character "

Did you put it off and on again? That sometimes works.
If not, turn the whole sheebang off, also the computer, and restart.

I didn't do anything particular, was just translating segment by segment in Studio when I suddenly stopped getting hits from the many term bases I have enabled (14 local term bases). I tried left-clicking in the tick box and also selecting it and pressing Enter, but the tick boxes remain unchecked. What can have happened?

Still using 2022 and will do until it collapses. Indeed, if I need to upgrade, I may just invest a bit more time into work-arounds or another tool.

In 20 years of translating I've never once contacted Trados for support so 2022 being "unsupported" doesn't faze me.

But we need to edit the xml sdlproj project file and modify the PackageProject attribute, keeping everything else unchanged before zipping the package, otherwise the import will fail. That’s a little bit more complicated than simply zipping the package as a sdlrpx.

That’s why I recommend returning merely the translated sdlxliff file and the translated text if the PM accepts. Most of the time the PM is ok with that. But of course, you should have the agreement before starting doing that.

That is true, however, although you can get everything out of an SDL Trados Studio Package you need to translate, you can't put your translation back in a SDL Trados Studio Return Package. [/quote]

In case you don't know it, SDL Trados Studio package (*.sdlppx) is actually a zip package. If you don't have Trados to open it, you just need to rename the extention *.sdlppx as *.zip, and unpack the zip file. You will find all package files in that unpacked folder, including target folder with .sdlxliff files for translation.

I then import .sdlxliff files in any compatible software for translation and deliver the translated .sdlxliff files to clients. Most of the time, clients accept them if you can't deliver a return package.

If you work with Python, use zipfile library to unpack that package:

Yes, occasionally, could help.
But I always managed to handle bilingual files with universal tmx, xliff, xml tools or python libraries for free. That covers almost all use cases. 😉

Translation agencies still swear by it, so in my case they are still extremely important and I'm still waiting for the first agency to even consider to move away from them.

That's a lot, indeed. Personally I intend to keep on using my SDL Studio 2019 version until it becomes physically impossible, before switching to the subscription model. I work almost exclusively with agencies that deliver me the sdlxliff files, so there is no need whatsoever to have the latest version at this moment.

For the instances I'm asked to translate in memoQ or Phrase I'm provided with a temporary licence at no cost.

2022 will no longer be supported in 2027 because the 2026 version is available. So for those who hesitate, you have until the end of the year, if you want Trados technical support and cloud options.

Yes, that is what I also understood. I believe they first phased out the Plus product, so at some point you could no longer buy a Plus licence (you had to buy two single licences). And then they stopped selling perpetual licences altogether.

New users can't buy a perpetual licence -- only a subscription.

I was surprised that perpetual licence users are still given the option to upgrade. However, if you have Trados 2022 and you do not upgrade now, you'll never be able to upgrade in the future.

Trados hasn't really gotten any new features since around 2017. But with the development pace of AI, it may be that you will no longer be able to use AI with an older version of Trados unless you perform workarounds.

I suspect it will collapse with some kind of Windows update in the 2030s somewhere (-: but you won't be able to upgrade to a newer perpetual version, even if they exist at the time, since upgrading is only allowed if you had paid for a licence in the past 3- 5 years or so.

I’m not sure CAT tools are still very useful, at least for me. I’ve barely used Trados since the beginning of the year. AITPE tasks and marketing translations require hardly any CAT tool; a two-column .docx or .xlsx file with source and target text is enough. That’s why I won’t pay 480 euros a year for a tool I only use a few times annually. Free cloud solutions or older CAT tools to be used occasionally when needed are enough.

Thanks for the tip. At a cost of €420 compared to €660 to upgrade to Trados 2026, it looks doable. Can you give some pros and cons of the two softwares? I'll download a trial version when I have a moment.

I'm the opposite of Mark, I don't usually upgrade until forced to, and I'm temperamentally inclined to just ride my Trados 2022 install until it physically collapses. But I don't want it to collapse in the middle of a four-figure job.

Am I right that the upgrade of the perpetual license means you *won't* have to pay the ongoing subscription costs for the new software? At US$795 it's a bit of a hit but doable. They're cutting off software support for Trados 2022 at the end of the year but if they're not going to cut off LanguageWeaver access, I'm still in two minds over it.

I don't know about that. 40 euros a month is not the end of the world, especially not since this cost is 100% tax-deductible.

The RWS website is so bad that it feels as a bunch of croocks. You can't even compare the normal and the Plus versions. There are menu items to which I don't have access: the items appear, but each time I want to click on them, they disappear again.
Moreover: I do NOT want something like a subscription. I want a perpetual licence. Full stop.
Not to mention that I have the feeling they want to ram their cloud down our throats, which feels very much like a scam to steal our work and feed their AI.
I just don't trust them.

Note that my post is not about Trados Freelance, but about Trados Freelance Plus. With Trados Freelance (non-Plus) you can install Trados only on one computer simultaneously. Even the cheapest MemoQ option gives you the right to install it on two computers simultaneously (e.g. one desktop and one laptop).

I suppose one could argue that we no longer need to install Trados on two computers because the Trados subscription includes both a desktop and a browser-based tool. But I don't know if the browser-based version of Trados is truly a drop-in replacement for the desktop tool.

The price of EUR 33,30 is for new users only, for Trados Freelance subscription, paid annually. Existing/returning users pay EUR 40 x 12, i.e. EUR 480 per year.

I know this is confusing, since Trados used to always have perpetual discounts listed on their website (which were available to everyone), but the discount you see on the current website is not a discount that is available to everyone -- it is for new users only, and only for the first year. New users essentially get the first two months free.

Where do you get that information? If I look at the Trados website there is only one Freelance option, which would cost you 33,3 euros per month for a yearly subscription right now. Still quite expensive, but not even close to what you are saying here. On the contrary: it's "cheaper" than MemoQ.

I'm happy that RWS has decided to throw perpetual users a bone by allowing them to upgrade their Trados licences to the latest version. RWS has previously indicated that it is going to push the subscription model -- in fact, they said (if I recall correctly) that users will have no choice but to use the subscription service.

Well, yes and no. If you switch to a monthly subscription, you're "upgrading" to the subscription, and if you're a new user, you're simply starting with your subscription.

Oh, wait... the "only for new licences" wording relates to the 2-month discount. The prices shown on the website are with the discount already applied, so if you're an existing user, you have to look at the price that is crossed out.

A subscription equivalent to Freelance Plus costs EUR 1080 per year (paid monthly) or EUR 960 per year (paid annually). Or you can simply pay EUR 108 per month on a monthly basis.

Curiously, for all three available upgrade paths it is actually cheaper (over a 2-year period) to simply upgrade your perpetual licence than to get a subscription. The upgrade costs are:

From 2021 to 2026: EUR 1.619
From 2022 to 2026: EUR 1.294
From 2024 to 2026: EUR 807

Compare this to MemoQ, which charges EUR 360 per year for a subscription equivalent to Freelance Plus, or EUR 40 per month on a monthly basis. Trados is almost 3 times as expensive as MemoQ, which is a superior product.
