Does anything ever actually happen in the world of translation? Jan 9, 2013

OK, I'm being flippant, but apart from new software versions, it's not like anything changes much

I used to . . . Jan 9, 2013

attend conferences, read newsletters, network with colleagues, etc. But I didn't find it was vital to my work. It was costing me money and interfering with my productivity, so I stopped. I don't regret the investment I made, but at this point in my career it's no longer important to me.

All I really care about is thoroughly understanding the source text, producing a well-expressed target, and delivering it on time, and getting paid well.

I like being informed thanks to one big social network that allows people to exchange information, but also, and mainly, through mail lists.

I am busy with this stuff pretty much 24/7 and I am a part of this industry. But I will take better care of staying up to date with the most recent and extremely thrilling and exciting developments of Heartworm 2.0, Idiot Workbench 12.9 and WürgFast before I miss out on all those important things.

Promise.

I've been partial to RoboTrans for years now, but I've hit some snags with the latest "Reloaded" version, and so I'm open to look at a change....

They are working on the prequel, "Tra-DOS: 1984 - Year One", so I heard.

As someone has already said, nothing much changes, as translation is not astrophysics with new particles being discovered every half hour. What you learned in college and what still remains in your brain after so many years is usually sufficient to take you through the rest of your career as a translator.

I spent more time, however, in keeping abreast of the latest developments in Hindi, my main working language. Language does change every hour, and you need to make special effort to keep in tandem with it. I do this by using my ears, eyes and mouth (listening, reading and speaking Hindi).

Technology is another area which requires some attention, although the changes brought about there are usually something without which you can do very well - most would agree that the yearly updates on most translation software are more a pain in the neck than worthwhile. But there it is.
