I chose “Other” because I wasn’t sure whether my tap dance, square dance and Zumba classes would count. These classes do make my brain work, but are mainly sports classes, which I participate in for FUN!

I give language classes and occasionally take painting and drawing classes.

On reflection however, I realise that I do go to occasional training sessions of certain kinds, some one-off, some regular although infrequent. The latter are compulsory ongoing annual training sessions, both on-line and face to face, for Cambridge ESOL oral examiners. I've been examining for over 20 years now, and teaching the exams for over 30, but there's always sth new which comes up and is stimulating (often as not the result of contributions from peers).
Likewise I also attend ESOL examination related presentation, management workshops, updating sessions on new legislations affecting "PYMES" (SMEs) and etc, organised either by publishers or by language school associations/federations. Occasionally I am attending as a presenter. There is always something useful to be got out of all these sessions, and I wish all my colleagues, both teaching and non-teaching staff, at the language school where I work, would attend them. Unfortunately some of them think they have nothing to learn from these, and others think that the plethora of on-line training opportunities is enough. But it's the contact which is most profitable, the chance to exchange ideas and reactions etc.
Oh, and teaching language classes always presents me with a learning curve challenge too.
Which brings me to point out that although they are not scheduled, and therefore can't really be classified as classes, I find many of the Proz features: forums, these polls, and even Kudoz enquiries, have the effect of a one-off class for me too.
So, to answer your question, yes I do: seminars etc relating to legislation and management. The rest are language/translation related. ▲ Collapse

I go to the bird-of-the-week sessions or the lectures offered at http://www.avesuruguay.org.uy where I am a member, but unfortunately it isn't often.
My frustration is that for years I've been planning to enroll in the three-day course on indigenous flora offered by the local Botanic Garden but I never have the courage to decide that I can take a whole Thursday and Friday off!

I know how you feel Noni. You would think that since I wrote the question that I have lots of time to take classes on non-translation/language topics. Nothing could be further from the truth. I answered "No, but I'd like to".
If I had more time I'd study history or maybe cooking. I've also thought that I'd like to take a class on First Aid or CPR (you never know when they might come in handy).

I've been studying it for 4 years and I have 32 academic credits. Unfortunately, the courses only lead to a certificate in landscape design, not a degree. I have tended to take the classes I was most interested in rather than those specifically required. For the certificate, I will have to study construction materials and business management, which don't interest me greatly.
I consider that my greatest accomplishment has been learning AutoCAD for landscape design. It took me a year.

Stupidly I clicked the wrong box, because I understood "take" as to instruct. So I'm afraid your statistics are all wrong John because I participate in a Spanish conversation class (well, hardly a class: one to one after years of people dropping out!), pilates, yoga and badminton to get the circulation going after hours looking at the "screen".

Sorry, answered "no" after reading the question too quickly ...
I take Muay Thai lessons. It's marvellous and intense, and keeps me fit and sane; I also like to think I could defend myself should the need arise, although I'd rather not have to find out.
I'm only sorry I discovered it rather late in my life - I am the granny in the class - but I intend to keep it up until I can't any longer.

That's Ok Wendy, I'll count your answer as some type of variable
(In reality these polls are billed as "non-scientific".)
Although I don't remember when I asked this question, it was probably at a point when I was wondering what to do with my precious little free time. In the end, I decided to go back to university and get a second degree. I'm enjoying it, but, like Muriel, I sometimes wish I had just decided to study something entertaining and completely unrelated to work.
A paraphrase of the poll could be, "Do you study something just for the fun of it?"

Swing dance, baking and sewing classes, of course not all at the same time...
And this past Monday, I started yoga classes with my mom.

I go to ballet a couple of times a week and stretching classes when I can. Very enjoyable and they take my mind off work

in common with several others: dance classes.
It's the perfect antidote to sitting at a computer all day. And it really exercises the mind too, in a different way, especially learning choreographed contemporary dance.

Currently I am studying for an LLM, I also take yoga and wing chung classes, with more spare time [and/or more energy] I'd love to pursue other interests too, but with two young children and running a business and the other commitments I already have, that seems unlikely for a few years still.
