2 big ones Feb 7, 2011

Good when you have to use reference material and saves the annoying switching with one screen

Just one - but a large one! Feb 7, 2011

Just one monitor - but a large one which enables me to open documents side by side so there's no need for a 2nd monitor. Love it!

I used to print out all the source documents that came in scanned or pdf format for example, and work on a laptop. Sometimes I would show the source text on a desktop monitor for proofreading. Now I have a 21" monitor for my new Mac mini and can easily show two full-page texts side by side on one monitor. Saves a lot of neck work, not to mention the paper. My trusty, 6-year-old iBook has been relegated to "fun" status, and travel of course.

I just use my laptop, without an additional monitor.

Sometimes 1, sometimes 2 Feb 7, 2011

I haven't had a desktop computer in years, but do sometimes connect a big external monitor to my notebook. This second monitor is installed in a portrait orientation (allowing me to see a full page of text) and is not to the side of the laptop but rather 0.5 m behind and slightly above it. This arrangement is quite comfortable to work with, and having to refocus your eyes back and forth when switching between the two screens gives you a fair amount of eye exercise.

Not usually. I do have the facility, just in case I ever need to use it, but this doesn't usually happen since I try to get all my work sent to me in Word format.
Didn't this question come up before?

Morning all,

I just use the one screen: 18" laptop screen with both documents side to side is fine (though it means the laptop is a little heavier!). And using Wordfast removes the need for side-by-side docs most of the time anyway...

Bon courage tlm,

Matt

Actually two desktop computers... Feb 7, 2011

one running Windows XP (painfully slow) for those Windows applications and another one running Ubuntu (delightfully fast) for everything else

In memoriam
Two, occasionally Feb 7, 2011

I use 2 screens (1 x17' + 1x21') particularly when working on PowerPoint. It allows me to keep and reproduce more easily the "aesthetic and graphical" aspect of the original in the much longer French translation.
I know that a lot of colleagues dislike working with PP, I don't. I must even say that I like it. It fulfills the "creative" part of my brain

two monitors rock! Feb 7, 2011

Investing in a second monitor has revolutionised my work. I can have the text I am working on up on one screen and use the other for internet research. Or I can put my glossaries up on the second screen, or sometimes a full version of a text complete with pictures while I work on a word file. It's also extremely useful when revising.

1 PC and 1 laptop Feb 7, 2011

Similar to: Adnan Özdemir, (who wrote, and I quote: Only 1 monitor, 21 inch wide LCD screen-Desktop PC.) However I also have a laptop with my own glossaries open. That way I can use on-line dictionaries and the text I am working on in the PC and the rest in my laptop. There is also another laptop for receiving and sending e-mails. All are connected in my network and have Windows 7.

Best regards to all,
