A little of both or Dec 25, 2009

the pessimist sees the glass as almost empty.
The optimist says, it is nearly full.
And the engineer simply takes a smaller glass

++++

The pessimist says: "Oh, it just can't get any worse."
But the optimist says: "Come on, together we'll make it!"

So much for optimism/pessimism. I think it's important to be neither and both.
Being either could mean that you are missing

Well, Merry Christmas everyone

Come on Dec 25, 2009

I think Christina is right, we can surely make it... different))

Glasses? Thirsty people can drink from the river, alcoholics drink right from the bottle, and many people in Central Asia prefer drinking bowls...

All in one)

Realist Dec 25, 2009

Shame there wasn't a realist category.

My husband thinks I'm an optimist. But that's because he's a pessimist. Personally, I think I'm a realist.

Yes, of course things might go wrong, but we can try to avoid that, and by doing nothing we invite catastrophe. I most certainly don't believe in fate - I believe in taking control of the situation. I think nowadays I'd be called a control freak.

Optimists, pessimists and realists Dec 25, 2009

Good afternoon on Christmas day 2009,

Here is my 2 cents on what I view as such a life-philosophy-related poll (kind of intense, but why not):

I selected "optimist", simply because to me any other choice would be denying the basic vital force and innate drive attitude that makes the world go round (so to speak) and people survive. That is, obviously it is not pessimism that has managed to take us this far as a human civilization in general (in spite of all the mistakes

That is, obviously it is not pessimism that has managed to take us this far as a human civilization in general (in spite of all the mistakes that have been/are made throughout history).

But I am definitely aware that optimism without realism may take you to a fantasy world, so I tend to think in terms of "balanced" optimism (meaning, you certainly don't deny the facts of reality).

Of course I know that there are things like depression, evil, catastrophes, etc., that can make your optimism shake, but even in these cases we also have the choice (or rather the means, technological, medical, etc.) to learn and move on from such negative experiences or simply to give up (and the latter attitude takes us to a place from which you usually don't return).

I guess it is, above all, about having the free, democratic right to choose an option, whether it is positive, negative or neutral.

A warm Christmas greeting to optimists, pessimists and realists alike,

Ivette

Half empty Dec 25, 2009

My glass, when half empty, often gets topped up. Which I guess makes me an optimist, or an alcoholic!

Merry Christmas everyone! x

Optimist - because thoughts give power to outcomes Dec 25, 2009

While I don't believe we can make things happen by simply affirming them or believing they're going to, I do believe that our lives are made better or worse by the power of our thoughts.

I once did an experiment writing down positive thoughts one day and every discouraging thought I could think of the next. The days when I was writing down positive thoughts I was open to opportunities and noticed them quickly. By the end of the second "discouraging" day I was depressed, angry, and

I once did an experiment writing down positive thoughts one day and every discouraging thought I could think of the next. The days when I was writing down positive thoughts I was open to opportunities and noticed them quickly. By the end of the second "discouraging" day I was depressed, angry, and careless and managed to drive my car straight into a tight situation where it got banged up. When I messed up my car, I dropped the experiment and decided to write down at least three warm fuzzes or positive/hopeful thoughts every day and have done so fairly consistently ever since.

My late husband believed that good things happened to him in even years and bad things in odd years. When something "bad" happened in an odd year, he would say: "See, I told you: it's an odd year. Look what happened! Mark my words!" But he kept things in balance by allowing himself good luck in even years ... and so I say to you, my colleagues: an even year awaits us! Happy 2010!!!
