How Many Types of Snakes Are There?
Under the current system of classification, there are approximately 3,400 snake species around the world.
Why is this an "approximate" number? Because scientists sometimes disagree about which animal should be a sub-species, which should be a primary species, and other factors relating to the classification of types of snakes. Additionally, our knowledge of the natural world is constantly evolving. New discoveries, and new ways of thinking about old discoveries, can change the way we look at snakes.
As a result of these things, animal classification changes over time. Consider this: Twenty years ago, there were less than 3,000 recognized species of snakes. Today, there are somewhere around 3,400. This is largely the result of sub-species being reclassified as a species of their own.
Now you can see why it's hard to give an exact answer when somebody asks, "How many different types of snakes are there?"
Similarities and Differences
All of the different types of snakes have certain things in common. They are all part of the suborder Serpentes. They all have scales. They all lack eyelids and ear openings. They have limbless bodies and forked tongues. Those are the similarities. There are also many ways in which they are different.
Some types of snakes are venomous, while others are not. And even within the venomous species, there are many differences. For example, some venomous snakes possess a neurotoxin type of venom that attacks the central nervous system of their prey. Others have a hematoxic venom that destroys the red blood cells of the animal that is bitten. Some are highly venomous and therefore dangerous to humans. Others possess a weaker type of venom that is only a threat to small animals.
