WHAT IS A VASCULAR ACCESS POINT?
Haemodialysis means ‘cleaning the blood’. It needs access to your blood stream so that blood can flow to the artificial kidney or dialyser. A ‘vascular access’ point is made during surgery. ‘Vascular’ refers to your blood vessels, e.g. arteries and veins. There are three types of access points. A fistula or graft, which are permanent, or a catheter. The catheter may also be permanent but is most often temporary until a fistula or graft is ready for use.
