Although it's a pretty free translation, I reckon it could work in this particualr context.

I don't honestly think that 'safe mode' is at all appropriate for your context, where you are apparently talking about what to do if something goes wrong.
'Safe mode' refers to a 'marche dégradée' situation where something (e.g. Windows) is operated with less than its normal functionality — usually applies to software, for example.
Here, there doesn't seem to be anything inherently 'safe' about operating without the mouse; as far as I can see, all they mean here is that the MMI is so designed as to be able to be used by the keyboard alone, in the event of a mouse not being available.

Thanks, Tom§ I don't personally see using just the keybopard justifies being called a mode', but if you prefer it, why not? And of course, in some contexts, that could be highly appropriate.
