English term

as cool as gear is

English Other Music drums
With so many options, drummers and consumers must consider John Good's comment, "What are you trying to achieve?" Martha Stewart once said something along these lines: When making a recipe, use the best ingredients you can afford. With this idea in mind, most companies offer kits aimed at beginners, professionals, and everyone in between. Whether it's a basic all-around kit or something more style-specific, look for a well-made drum.
Just remember, ***as cool as gear is***, try not to get sucked into the minutia or marketing hype too much. Listen, for as Jim Haler says, "Beauty is in the ear of the beholder." And take to heart what jazz great Joey Baron said in his Ask A Pro response in the October, 2006 MD: "Remember that you produce the sound, no matter what brand of instrument you play."

Can't really get what the phrase stands for - would someone please clarify it for me!

no matter how cool equipment is

gear is used in the sense of specific equipment for a certain setting or task. "as cool as... is" means "no matter how cool... it is".

agree Jim Tucker (X) : yes, "as" = "no matter how" (I suspect this caused the problem as much as the vocab.)

it does not matter what the instrument looks like

"cool" -modern looking; "gear" - equipment. Appearances could be deceptive.

"cool" - "крутой" (слэнг), "gear" - устройство

neutral Tony M : I would say that 'cool' probably means more than just 'modern-looking', and it's not really saying "it doesn't matter" so much as "don't be seduced by how good it may appear to be"

Yes, you are right. An old and worn instrument may sound much better then brand new and flashy.

All the drum kit gear on the market is 'cool', but not all of it is necessary or good.

"Just remember, ***as cool as gear is***, try not to get sucked into the minutia or marketing hype too much."

The author is saying that there is a lot of 'cool stuff' available for sale to go with/on a drum kit, (and it is beautifully advertised and displayed) like double bass peddles, dozens of cymbal choices, as well as percussion pieces that 'look' fantastic to the buyer. Also, some kits have 10 drums that look terrific, but are possibly not well made. Not all the 'cool gear' displayed and advertised (hyped) is a necessary part of what one needs to have a good drum kit to play - the sound is what matters most. Selecting good drums - considering the wood, tone, and quality are above all, what one should do when buying a drum kit.

Thank you, Alexondra.
neutral Tony M : But I don't really think it's suggesting that ALL the gear on the market is cool; simply that, however cool it may appear to be, ...

Thank you, Tony ~ I concur, but with a teenage drummer (a she) in residence, I thought I'd give the standard lecture! Happy holidays to you!
