Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Apr 16, 2005:
the recipients also controversial for their views
Non-ProZ.com Apr 16, 2005:
all of the people receiving the awards are known as vocal in voicing their views and they often speak up before the public
Non-ProZ.com Apr 16, 2005:
yeah the figures are vocal/critical
conejo Apr 16, 2005:
This sentence, gAll the figures are controversial and very vocal in speaking up before the public" doesn't make sense. The figures are vocal? A person has to be vocal. Can you give some more clarification or a different sentence?

Are you asking for corroboration of your own proposed wording, or what?

I would say it doesn't make a lot of sense, nor sound very natural to me.

You might be wanting to say 'public speaking' or 'speaking in public', but I suspect what you are really trying to say it 'speaking out publicly' --- in other words, making some grievance etc. public knowledge.

"All these figures are controversial and vociferous in speaking out in public"

I don't really like tagging on the '...in public' like this, but in this particular sentence it's better than using a hanging 'publicly'

Another problem in your sentence as it stands is trying to use \'figures\' to refer to both \'people\' AND \'organizations\' --- it doesn\'t really feel very comofortable, and I certainly support other answerers\' attempts at separating the two, which in any case makes for a more pleasing sentence structure.

In a political context, I believe that \'speaking out\' (against injustice, discrimination, etc.) is more powerful than merely \'speaking up\', which to my ears has a much more everyday feel to it, more appropriate to domestic situations:

\"Shirley knew the answer to the teacher\'s question, but was afraid to speak up\"

The figures are controversial, and the organizations who received the awards are very vocal in....

Possibility 1:
The figures are controversial, and the organizations who received the awards are very vocal in speaking up about their views in public.

Possibility 2:
The figures are controversial, and the organizations who received the awards are publicly very vocal in speaking up about their views.

Figures cannot be vocal.

"Before the public" sounds a bit odd. "Speaking up publicly" or "speaking up in public" sounds better.

neutral Tony M : I have to say that I don' t actually agree with the 'Asker comment' you made above; why on earth can't a figure be vocal? We often talk about "Mr X. has been a very vocal figure in this movement"

This might be the phrase you need. They can write stuff, be on TV, radio etc. and generally "speak up".
