goods sold from a vehicle
Car boot is the British English term for what is called a car trunk in American English, i.e. the rear storage compartment.
In the Medicines Act, the term "premises" is not defined but its ordinary meaning is a building or buildings with adjoining land. Its usage in the Act indicates that it does not include stalls or vehicles. For this reason, we take the view that the sale of medicines from from a market stall or vehicle (i.e. a van or car) for example at a car boot sale, would not comply with the law.

: agree with goods being sold from the trunk of a vehicle, but where does the Medicines Act come into it?

The Medicines Act just happened to be a source where the term is explained.

Flohmarkt
is the nearest you can get to it here.

So called because the sellers bring their goods in the boot of their car - or used to; now it\'s just as likely to appear in a three-ton transit-type van....

: 'tailgate fleamarket' appears to be a N.American name used by some for something very like UK carboot sales http://bend.com/news/ar_view^3Far_id^3D10087.htm

garage sale, UK version
people meet in a parking lot somewhere and they open their trunks (the boot) to display their stuff.
European countries now have their own version of garage sales, they have to hold them in a different location though, as a lot of people live in apartments, you can't drive around or park as easily as in the US, etc.

: usually in a big open field somewhere, often out of town. People bring the stuff by car but then usually lay it out on the ground or put it on a table. They've become very popular and happen all over the place - often weekly in the same location

: good explanation from Armorel (like Kurt, 'garage sale' makes me think of a sale at someone's home rather than a car-park/field/etc) //I like 1st.part of Sarah's explanation :-)

Not for Grading
I like the below link. It pretty much sums it up.
Question - do the British have Fleamarkets, where goods are sold of tables in lots? If not, I'd go with "Fleamarket, UK style." Garage sale/yard sale, that has the connotation to me of a family or group of family selling something out of the garage, or off their lawn. Perhaps even combining with another couple of families. You see both here in Germany (fleamarkets/garage sales), and in the U.S.
I like the concept though. You save effort by not having to unpack the car in the lot! :)

: nice ref. Agree about 'garage sales' being more 'at [someone's] home/garage,etc'. 'tailgate fleamarket' appears a US equiv.to 'carboot sale' to some ext. Interesting transatlantic discussion http://discussions.bbcamerica.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1494...

Flea markets are a bid deal in the States, esp. in Ca. Not much selling out of cars though...tables in lots. Thank you.

: there are fleamarkets in the UK. At a car boot sale they put up a notice on a field on the outskirts of a village saying there will be a sale, Then if you have something to sell you pay a small registration fee and turn up on the day with your goods.
