English to Arabic Bus/Financial Retail award programs
"Know Your IBM" is an IBM rewards program for third party dealers/retailers, whereby they get points for sales and can redeem these points in equipment from IBM. I have a very akward sentence: "Your Know Your IBM user details are: " The double "your" is the problem and I have ran out of creative ideas, especially as the client wants me to leave the acronym IBM in the Arabic sentence in English. Any help?

There is a diffference in that taking away the Your also robs the program of its personalization. Know IBM is to know the whole company. Know Your IBM is to get to know the point redemption program run by the IBM.

Hi Sam, I think if we drop "You" in the Arabic translation, this will not affect the meaning at all. what is the difference between

and
اكتشف آي بي إم الخاصة بك
no difference, even the latter is not good and is ركيكة

I would definitely leave the whole expression in English, not just the name of the company. I would explain to the client that in Arabic, the possessive is part of the word it modifies (if they know Romanian, tell them it is like the definite article in Romanian). There is no way to have the name of the company in English with the possessive in Arabic. And the fact that the name of this unique and proprietary is a greater cause for Keeping it in English. There is no harm in giving it a free translation where the promotional message of the expression is emphasized. But wherever the expression is used as a name for a specific program, it is not a good idea to translate it.

If they insist on translating it, then they will have to let something go. Translation is an art of wise compromises. If you insist on everything, you lose everything. In this sentence, the possessive is the one element that is crying out to go.

I think you should convince your client that it's better to use the Arabic letters of IBM, since the Arabic version is very common.

I agree Waleed. If I could convince the client, how would I say "Your IBM"? Because this is very much about "Your", not just IBM.

I read your note to Waleed about "Your". I see your point, but I am still thinking if there is a way to get this into the Arabic version

If I were to translate the sentence into a more literal way , I would probably say:
دليلك إلي آي بي إم
دليلك إلي عالم آي بي إم
(I wrote it in Arabic to avoid its torsion)
and If I were to translate it based on its objective, I would say one of the following:
البرنامج التحفيزي لتجار أي بي إم
البرنامج التحفيزي لمنافذ بيع أي بي إم
دليل التاجر إلي حوافز آي بي إم
إنطلاقة إلي فرص آي بي إم
دليلك التسويقي إلي آي بي إم
برنامج حوافز أي بي إم لشركاء النجاح
I think this last one is exceptionally good.
