"Stagnant zone" I would like to thank everyone's input. In the end airmailrpl provided a link with an image that put things into perspective.
There are various types of flow problems with silos and I believe the term "morto" is a general term referring to material that is not being recovered. As such, I chose to use the term "stagnant zone".

Done... thanks Nick :)

@Francisco PS - you might want to open it up to NON members. It widens the field and quite honestly the quality of answers is the same. Just a thought :-)
Francisco Alves (asker) Sep 4, 2021:
Hi Nick, thanks for the suggestion :) I will do so as a last resort. I was hoping the Proz community might shed light on this.
The term pops up three times in the document. Reading it in context I suspect it may have something to do with a "dead zone" created inside the ore silos by the way the ore falls.
Nick Taylor Sep 4, 2021:
@Francisco Honestly my friend, I think you have to get back to source text provider :-)

Stable arch
If the material is strong enough, another problem that can develop is the formation of a stable arch across the hopper outlet (see Figure 2B).

Os seguintes problemas podem afetar o desempenho em passagens de minério, segundo Hambley (1987):
1. Entupimentos (blockages) devido a arcos coesivos.
2. Bloqueios (hang-ups) devido a arcos mecânicos.
