The Misha
: Now you are trying to translate an idiom verbatim. It doesn't work this way.

mrrafe
: In fact they didn't scrutinize him, they attacked/lambasted him /// Scrutinize = critically study, examine, analyze. I don't think anyone, regardless of political orientation, would say this happened. Scrutiny can't be ruthless, only investigatory.

what's wrong with "he was scrutinised ruthlessly"?

: Grilling connotes questioning, as of a defendant in court. The shows didn't question him; he avoided them. /// Sorry to complain, I just got frustrated by some of the answers as a group.

the then president was [endlessly/mercilessly] ridiculed/mocked

mrrafe
: He wasn't ridiculed or mocked, he was accused of crimes. ///No, hosed means stripped of everything, as with a fire hose - "taken to the cleaners." I thought that was the ST's idea, that he was ruined, although actually he came out OK.

Well, he wasn't "hosed" (whatever that means) either, or was he? ;)

This means attack mercilessly but without much effect; I thinbk it's the equivalent of the original text "rinse." With all respect, and regardless of any personal political orientation on my part, other answers here reflect that the answerers may not have personally experienced the politics and news commentary of the Clinton period and are misdescribing it. I don't give negative points but some of the answers are factually inaccurate.

got roasted
After Awkward Night Of Roasting, Hillary Clinton Takes One Final Crack At Donald Trump

Может быть не совсем нужный оттенок, потому что "got roasted" означает откровенное осуждение, но я не вижу здесь других более близких по смыслу ответов, потому предлагаю свой вариант.
