English term

I was in the housing department

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello everyone,

Narrator: SOUTHERN Mississippi was supported in the recruiting by a minister from hattiesburg named Ken Fairley.

Ken Fairley: Well, **I was in the housing department**. This was not an official job for me. We felt more that it was a calling. We were in ministry, and because there was a lot of money being forked out to buy the better players, some of us started a campaign to say not to sell yourself; find the right institution for the right reasons.

Do I understand correctly that he worked in the housing department of the University of Southern Mississippi (official job) and in addition helped the university to recruit new players (unofficial job)&

Thank you.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Phoenix III

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Apparently "The Reverend Ken Fairley"was not ... Apparently "The Reverend Ken Fairley"was not a good person->

But the one figure in Marcus' life who appeared of fatherly influence was soon exposed a fraud. The Reverend Ken Fairley, a Hattiesburg, Mississippi pastor who deliberately connected with the young phenom while still a high school star, handled Dupree's finances, posing as an agent of sorts, while establishing himself power of attorney over all of Dupree's dealings. When the now-pro running back received his first professional paycheck, a tender of $45,000, Fairley quickly tracked him down and assumed possession of it. It was the last paycheck he ever saw from the Breakers.

To this day a senior pastor at Mount Carmel Ministries in Hattiesburg, Fairley is a despicable and deceitful creature whose shady and misleading deeds extend well beyond the financial crumbling of Marcus Dupree. This much is validated by multiple inside sources, but the details of such are neither of pertinence to Dupree's story, nor in good taste of Fairley's victims.

Thanks!
So, it's clear from this Ken Fairley IS a Minister (the Revd) (his official job). So the other volunteer role seems to be to help players find the right place. Because Marcus was so close to his family, that would seem to have been Sth Mississippi but he signed for Oklahoma instead and phoned Fairley afterwards to say he was unhappy there... And he did eventually move back to Mississippi but only for a few months because of rules... So "housing" would seem to be about finding the right institution and accommodation in it...but not sure

Well, I don't know if it helps in this case, but here's the documentary itself where you can see Ken Fairley talking.

at 30.25 (narrator and then Ken Fairley himself).

And Sheila, Gallagy, thank you for your input!

Any more context available?

a housing dept/housing officer is a term usually used by city councils to describe the social housing unit so really can't see it used in University where someone dealing with housing students would be an "accommodation officer". But maybe he's using the wrong term? Also "we are in ministry" might mean he is a religious Minister but it might also mean that he is doing this as charitable work (a "calling"). He is trying to help student players find the right institutions i.e. not just go to the one that screams loudest/offers most money but the one that is right for them. So his role is to offer advice to prospective student/players and he is doing this as a volunteer. It's hard to figure it out...So, it's possible he means "housing" as a verb (to house players): he wants to find the right "house=institution) for the players being recruited

Would a housing department have a minister? Maybe it would in America. That's what he seems to be. His job is minister;his position is in the housing department; unnofficially, he gives particular advice to students.

Thank you, Shera.

From this context ... it seems to me that Ken Fairley's official job was be the minister, and the housing dept job was unofficial. The recruiting may have been a part of his job as minister. But it certainly isn't very clear.

I helped with student accommodation

so, as a Minister he helped with the pastoral needs of the students and also helped them with accommodation/housing.
So it is called "housing" here. He also helped students find the most apropriate institutions for them
