I always used "conductor" for "orchestraa conductor". I have been told lately that the precise terminology would be "music conductor".
In an official website would it be more appropriate "music conductor", "orchestra conductor" or just "conductor"?
thank you

I would just go with "conductor"

might depend on what goes before ... if an orchestra is mentioned, it's implicit and "conductor" would be ok ... otherwise "orchestra conductor"

but it DOES depend on your overall context

Comment: "Yes, I agree. If there is no context, though, I think it would be preferable "orchestra conductor". (and not "music conductor")"

Musical director
If you are talking about the role a person plays in a symphony orchestra, I think "conductor" would be best. I wanted to put out there, though, that if you are referring to someone who conducts a smaller theater orchestra, the job title will often be "musical director."
Example sentence:
The musical director asked the musicians to come in for an extra rehearsal of the songs from Act II.
Note from asker:
Thank you, ChessiePique! I might agree with ChananZass as well, though, about "musical (or music) director" |
Peer comment(s):
disagree |
ChananZass
: Musical director = direttore musicale (nothing to do with conductor)
