Thanks to all of you.
Cristina Balmus (asker) Jan 11, 2009:
The document I m translating is about mechanically welded aluminium alloy joints that will be compose a Variable Immersion Base. This term 'dédoublement' only appears once in the whole text, i.e. in the listing of the types of operation that are carried out during the control prior to manufacture. The title of the chapter is :
RECAPITULATIF DES CONTRÖLES A EFFECTUER SUIVANT LA CLASSE

Unfortunately, this is the only clarification I can provide.

Overlapping.

Pure guess. That's the translation in football (yes, I know) but it could means that the weld has "débordé".

Thank you for choosing my option, Cristina, and thanks to Claire.
Peer comment(s):

agree Claire Cox : the AFNOR glossary gives overlap (defect) as a translation for dédoublure (défaut de laminage) - could it be that they're checking for overlaps here?

Given that "dédoublage" is "l'action de dégarnir un vetement de sa doublure" (Wikidictionnaire), this seems as likely an explanation as any. The part may, for example, have a protective film of plastic, grease, or paint. More context would certainly help.

matching

This could equally well be a clarification request, but since there's an element of an answer, it is likely to be rejected ;-)

What exactly are they doing?

If they are welding parts together it's entirely possible that they might be a matching operation first, i.e. identifying parts that, as cast, fit together most closely, to make the tidiest joint for welding, the smoothest finish, etc.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : in the sense of unifying, bringing together of two elements.
