: the AFNOR glossary gives overlap (defect) as a translation for dédoublure (défaut de laminage) - could it be that they're checking for overlaps here?

Given that "dédoublage" is "l'action de dégarnir un vetement de sa doublure" (Wikidictionnaire), this seems as likely an explanation as any. The part may, for example, have a protective film of plastic, grease, or paint. More context would certainly help.

If they are welding parts together it's entirely possible that they might be a matching operation first, i.e. identifying parts that, as cast, fit together most closely, to make the tidiest joint for welding, the smoothest finish, etc.
